Remember that feeling of staring at your exam and your mind suddenly going blank? That’s test anxiety, and your child might be going through it. Here’s what you can do to help them overcome it.

Teach Your Child to Cope With Test Anxiety

Does your child suffer whenever they have to take a test? Does your child find it practically impossible to settle down and study? It’s normal to feel nervous before an exam, but for some children it's more than just nerves. Exams can make them feel stressed and anxious. Luckily you can help soothe your stressed child and teach them how to cope with test anxiety.
  • Recognize test anxiety: Test anxiety can make it difficult for a child to focus during their exam. Teach your child to recognize the signs of test anxiety so they can try to self-soothe and relax.
  • Breathe: Anxiety and stress trigger shallow breathing, which decreases oxygen flow to the brain. In turn, low oxygen makes it hard to recall information and to concentrate during an exam. Remind your child to take deep breaths and focus on calming their racing heart and mind. Just breathe in and out.
  • Move on: Sometimes your child may be stuck on a question during their exam, making themselves even more anxious. Talk to your child about accepting when they don’t know something and moving on. Anxiety won’t give them the answer. Instead, they should focus on what they do know.
  • Put the test in perspective: Some children equate flunking a test to being a failure, which is completely not true. Talk to you child about the importance of self-worth and how doing poorly on a test doesn’t make them any less important. One exam doesn’t measure their worth.
  • Focus on the positive: All children need to hear how great they are often. Remind them of all the skills they have and the things they know. Focus on the positive because concentrating on poor test scores is not going to do any good.
